EMS and ISO 14001 Training

The Lexington Group delivers environmental management systems (EMS) training courses to its clients and, periodically, through government and non-profit organizations at selected sites in the United States and Latin America. These courses are taught in both English and Spanish by The Lexington Group principals and senior associates, all of whom are bilingual.

The Lexington Group currently offers the following standard EMS training courses, all of which can be tailored to the needs of individual clients:

EMS Planning and Policy—2 days

This course covers the background to EMS standards (of which ISO 14001 is the most recognized) and a detailed review of typical EMS requirements for Policy and Planning. Through group exercises, participants learn to identify environmental aspects, develop criteria of significance, select "significant environmental aspects," set objectives and targets, and draft an environmental policy.

EMS Implementation—2 days

Participants in this 2-day course receive a wide-ranging introduction to the implementation requirements of EMS standards, including responsibilities and organizational structure; training; communication; documentation of the EMS; document control; records management; operational controls; EHS compliance management systems; and emergency preparedness. The course also covers ISO 14001-required monitoring and measurement systems, performance indicators, corrective and preventive action, internal audit programs, and management review.

We emphasize practical approaches to integration of ISO 14001 with ISO 9000 quality management systems, as well as the application of Total Quality Management tools such as root cause analysis to the development of ISO 14001 operational controls.

EMS Planning and Implementation—3 days

For clients who require a single, concentrated training session, this course combines the two courses described above into a comprehensive 3-day review of requirements for planning and implementing an EMS.

ISO 14001 Internal Auditing—2 days

This course briefly reviews the ISO 14001 standard from the perspective of the internal audit and covers basic ISO 14001 auditing principles, ISO 14010-12 Audit Standards, "best practices" for auditing, difficult-to-audit areas of the ISO 14001 EMS, major and minor ISO 14001 non-conformities and "observations," opening and closing meetings, and reporting audit results. The course includes group exercises and a practice audit (at the customer site).
